Equipping people with the skills they need to make a difference in their local community. Sunrise Conference is a training event that teaches people how to start, run and manage local community projects. Taking place the first weekend of September, we invite the movers and the shakers of community action to share their experience with our audience as well as seminars, workshops and brainstorms on how to make a difference in your local area. Find out more at sunriseconference.org.
In 2010, we established a fund to allow a local community group to host a public understanding of science talk - and we called it, the Worfolk Lecture. The first ever lecture was delivered by Dr Terrence Kee on the subject of "did life on Earth originate on Earth?" If you weren't able to attend, never fear - you can also watch them online.
For many humanists, the holiday period is a time for spending time with friends and family, and enjoying the comforts of a cosy bustling household and good food. Unfortunately, not everyone is so lucky. So, every year the Humanist Action Group stages its annual holiday food drive in aid of local homeless shelters. We put together as many boxes of food as we can and go round delivering them where they are needed the most. Everyone is welcome to get involved.
